MINIMALLY INVASIVE DENTISTRY

Most conservative, least invasive, predictable restoration of teeth to normal form and function with tooth colored restorations. Note: Amalgam (silver) restorations can still be done upon patient’s request.

INTRA-ORAL CAMERAS

The best way to remedy dental problems is to catch them as early as possible, which is why regular dental checkups are recommended. But no matter how skilled the dentist is or how bright a light he uses, it can be difficult to see well inside of a patient’s mouth. Even with a magnifying mirror, it is possible to miss the often tiny indicators of developing problems. The intraoral camera, used at our Gravelly Lake Dentistry, is a technological advancement that makes it possible to not only detect the smallest of details, but also show these tiny defects to the patient and record them for later reference.

We utilize intra-oral camera technology in every room that helps you better understand your diagnosis. An intra-oral camera is a very small camera that allows our practice to view clear and precise images of your mouth, teeth and gums in order for us to make accurate diagnoses. What does this mean for you, the patient? We believe that our patients have the right to know exactly what’s going on in his/her own mouth.

How does the Intraoral Camera Work?

About the size of a pen and with a tiny lens on the end, the intraoral camera is moved around inside the patient’s mouth, capturing video images that are transmitted to the dentist’s computer. The dentist can then freeze specific shots and examine the pictures of the patient’s teeth and gums, which can more easily reveal the beginnings of cavities, gum disease, or other dental maladies. These images can be enlarged, manipulated, and stored for improved diagnoses and easy record keeping.

The intraoral camera also allows patients to see for themselves what is going on inside their mouths. Often, a dentist may see a trouble spot, such as a small section of teeth that is being neglected during brushing, but can only describe the position and condition of these teeth to the patient. With the intraoral camera, the dentist can photograph the area and show the patient exactly what the teeth look like.

Apart from the Intra-Oral Camera, our office utilizes a 35mm SLR semi-professional camera that produces high resolution images. These provide a more accurate diagnosis and are also used for greater precision during all complex restorative and esthetic cases.

COMPUTER IMAGING

Want to know what your finished smile will look like before the dentist even begins treatment? For the past several years, with the aid of computer imaging technology, we digitally enhance a photo of your smile to show you what to expect if you follow our recommended cosmetic dentistry treatments. Computer smile imaging can show the dazzling effects that porcelain veneers, teeth whitening, porcelain crowns, restorative dentistry, and other procedures can have on your smile.

DIGITIZED RADIOGRAPHY

Advantages of Digital Dental X-Rays

We are often asked by patients about the advantages of digital radiography when used in our dental office. Digital radiography is a form of x-ray imaging where sensors are used instead of traditional photographic film. There are two types of dental radiological examinations—intraoral, with sensors placed inside the mouth, and extraoral, where the sensor is outside the mouth. An extraoral X-ray image is commonly referred to as a Panoramic X-ray and is used to visualize a larger region.

In 2006, we purchased both a digital intraoral x-ray machine as well as a digital extraoral panoramic machine, commonly referred to as a digital Panorex . After several years practicing dentistry using conventional X-ray technology, we are excited to share the benefits of digital radiology with our patients. First and foremost, digital radiography reduces my patient’s exposure to radiation—usually 70 to 80 percent. Many patients are very relieved that digital radiology significantly lowers the amount of radiation they will receive.

There is no chemical processing of the x-rays, eliminating the inconvenience and environmental impact associated with disposal of conventional film developers Thirdly, digital X-rays facilitate communication with patients as well as other practitioners. The digital images are immediately available to view. Using current technology, it is very easy to enhance, enlarge, or refine the X-ray images. Brightness, color and/or contrast of digital X-rays can be adjusted without re-exposing the patient for another film. Patients are now able to view their X-rays instantaneously on the computer monitor screens located in each operatory.

One of the most useful advantages is that we can send the digital image to other doctors in a few minutes. Often, while a patient is still seated in the dental chair, I can call other referring doctors to discuss their treatment plan. This can understandably save time for both patients and doctors alike.

Finally, digital X-ray images can be stored in each patient’s database on the computer. This process saves time and allows me to easily retrieve this information when necessary.

As you can see, digital radiology offers many advantages when compared with traditional film based X-rays. The decision to ‘go digital’ in our office has both enhanced and improved patient care.

Cone Beam – 3D Imaging

Gravelly Lake Dentistry uses the Galileos Cone Beam 3D Imaging system that combines the highest resolution, 3-dimensional scans of the dental structures with the absolute best in patient safety. The Galileos has amazing technology and a long history in the medical community. However, unlike a medical CT scan, Galileos offers unparalleled imaging without the high dose of radiation common in conventional scans.

The best thing about Galileos 3D is that it contains an integrated face scanner. This means we can show you, using your own face and bone structure, what you will look like after treatment. You can see for yourself how recommended dental procedures will result in a beautiful new you.  With this revolutionary technology, you can make confident decisions about your dental care.
